Dateline: Tuesday, April 7, 1925 – SCENE 02 – Adler, Moriarity, and Morello go to Fashowi’s Cafe and wait for Najjar to arrive. Adler approaches Najjar and speaks with him whilst Moriarty and Morello search the cafe for suspicious characters. They spot two swarthy men looking intently at both of them as well as as Adler and Najjar.
After convincing Najjar that they are on his side, Najjar tells Adler to accompany him to the mosque; he will not speak of things pertaining to the Carlyle expedition without the protection of Allah.
Not surprisingly, the trio notices that the two sinister-looking men from the cafe are following them. They do not go into the mosque. Once inside, Najjar enters a small office with Adler and tells him his story: He had been approached by the Frenchman, Warren Bessart, who was looking to purchase some artifacts for Roger Carlyle. Najjar told Bessart that he either had them or could obtain them. However, that was a lie, but Najjar knew where to find them: they were in possession of a wealthy businessman, Omar Al-Shakti; a name known to the investigators from Elias’ clues.
Najjar, along with is underworld contacts, stole the artifacts from Shakti and sold them to Bessart. Afterwards he claims he was attacked by a demon who inflicted burns upon him and destroyed his beautiful shop. He believes this demon was sent by Al-Shakti to kill him for stealing the artifacts. Najjar tells Adler that he also sold a map to Bessart that shows a secret tunnel beneath the great pyramids; he believes that this is connected to the Brotherhood of the Black Pharaoh and that they intend to resurrect the Pharaoh. One of the artifacts Najjar sold to Bessart matches the Necklace of Nitrocris the investigators saw in the dream of their past lives.
Watching from outside, Moriarity watches the two men, who suddenly leave their post at the mosque and head in the direction of Najjar’s shop. Moriarity wracks his brain to recall where he had seen these men before and then it clicks: they were on the train from Port Said and were eyeing the investigators intently.
Moriarty lets them pass and returns to watching the mosque.
SCENE 03 – Al-Sedat, Crandal, and Taylor break into Najjar’s shop looking for clues. Taylor uncovers several replicas of the statue of the Black Pharaoh in a cabinet and Crandal locates the sales records but several pages are torn out. She finds the missing pages in Najjar’s living quarters behind the shop.
As they are searching the shop, Taylor hears voices outside and then someone tries the door handle. Whoever it is then moves to the window and tries opening the shutter. They investigators scatter and hide in the dark.
The door is kicked in and the two men from the cafe enter, now brandishing African throwing knives. From his hiding place, Taylor waits until they pass him and then he silently springs out and stabs one of them in the side with his knife, causing a fatal wound. The other man is utterly surprised at meeting resistance and flees.
Taylor bends over the man he stabbed but it is too late, he accidentally must have struck a vital artery and the man is bleeding out. Taylor follows the others in fleeing the scene.
