Scene 01 – As Kenji continues the investigation into the night on his own, Ivan pours himself a drink and lights a cigarette. Easing himself into the small folding chair in his cabin, he reviews the case file until he begins to doze … thoughts of something Dr de Maat said during his first visit with the LAPD psychologist drift into his mind …
SCENE 02 – Dr de Maat greets Ivan as he enters her office for the first time after canceling several times. de Maat tries to make Ivan feel at ease, but he is tense, defensive; he has built strong walls around the things he doesn’t want to share. de Maat notes his paranoia and belief that all Replicants are machines bound to fail at some point.
SCENE 03 – DAY 2: SHIFT 1 – While Kenji rests, Basher and Ivan make their way to the Recreation Hall of the Zen Aero. The Rec Hall is massive, like a miniature city, built up from the deck to the towering ceiling, criss-crossed by metal walkways and stairs; it is very crowded, noisy, full of smoke and noise.
Inquiring at a noodle stand gives them directions to the meeting hall for the Sons of Tyrell: Port Side, Level 2. After ascending to Level 2, both Blade Runners see two large men talking w the noodle stand owner, pointing in their direction. The men separate.
SCENE 04 – As Basher and Ivan enter the HQ for the Sons of Tyrell, they notice one of the men that was watching them at the end of the gantry. They head inside.
The Sons of Tyrell HQ has two small rooms: a meeting room in the back and an office area in front. A table dominates the front room, filled with stacks of fliers. A small, middle aged man stands at a printer behind the table.
Introducing himself as Silas Whittaker, the detectives do not learn much other than the fact that Zola Lngford is not a member of their organization.
SCENE 05 – Piper heads to the medical bay and meets the ship’s nurse, Nils Jensen. Jensen is very polite and tells Piper that he can assist with whatever she needs. There is something in Jensen’s manner that adds unknown emphasis on this point.
Examining the chief engineer’s body doesn’t turn up much new evidence other than confirming that whoever murdered du Champs is probably a trained killer.
du Champ’s personal effects are devoid of any money, which strikes Piper as odd. She finds a small, handwritten note in one of his pockets that reads, CHECK FUEL LEVEL – BERTHA.
SCENE 06 – DAY 2: SHIFT 2 – Ivan returns to the Rec Hall, this time with Kenji, and they enquire of the same noodle shop for directions to the Red Hand HQ. Ascending to the 3rd Level, in a little-used corner of the Hall, the Red Hand HQ is only accessible by a single staircase, carefully guarded by several tough-looking people lounging across the steps and blocking passage.
The detectives bribe their way past the guards and into the HQ, which looks like a warehouse containing items ranging from medical supplies to vehicle parts and high tech accessories. They are greeted by one of the big, blonde, spikey-haired men they saw earlier, who turns out to be a bodyguard for the leader of the Red Hand: Nigel Whitehead.
Kenji bribes Whitehead and discovers that Doctor Packard is, in Nigel’s opinion, an idiot — his addictions make him unpredictable and while he is possibly capable of murder, he doesn’t have the capacity of a crime of this magnitude. Nigel was ‘indisposed’ at the time of the murder but informs them that he had nothing to do with it; murder is not good for business. In fact, he advocates non-violence even towards the Sons of Tyrell.
Whitehead also reveals their inside man: Nurse Jensen. The doctor is totally unaware of Jensen’s involvement with the Red Hand.
The detectives learn that Zola Langford is a member of the Red Hand, but not a prominent one. Whitehead claims he doesn’t recognize her.
SCENE 07 – Piper returns to the medical bay and examines the baseline test machine. She discovers that the machine was very cleverly sabotaged and the sabotage is so well hidden it would have had to be done by someone with vast computer knowledge. It is possible that whatever virus was loaded onto the baseline test machine was set on a timer, and that it could have also shut down the other systems when the murder occurred.
SCENE 08 – Ivan meets up with Captain Argossy just as she is about to take mess and after filling her thermos with coffee, heads to the top deck to talk in private.
Argossy reveals that Bertha is one of the Zen Aero’s submersibles. The ship has two – Bertha, and Clarabel. Heading to Bertha, Argossy confirms that the sub is at 1/2 fuel and its logs have been erased.
Ivan presses Argossy on why Zola Langford is on board the ship and Argossy reveals that Zola is from a very poor family that lived in the hallway outside of her flat. Zola’s family is dead — whether the victims of crime, disease, or a combination of both, is not stated. Argossy knew Zola to be a good-hearted kid with everything stacked against her and informally adopted Zola during her last shore leave, making sure she had a place to sleep and food to keep her off the streets where she would very likely end up dead, or wishing she were, in short order. Argossy and the other officers have agreed to keep Zola’s true identity a secret and this is why her baseline tests have been faked.
