SCENE 01 – Hearing the sound of the thump from the lobby and footsteps in the corridor has the investigators scrambling to deal with whatever this new threat might be.

The swinging door to the kitchen opens and a man bursts in dressed in a Russian sailor’s uniform. The man is clearly drunk and reeks of alcohol, shouting at them in Russian; he holds a shotgun in his hands.

George tries to get shells into the shotgun be retrieved from the police station but in his panic he fails, shells falling to the floor. The others try to talk the Russian down and Rowdy tackles the Russian.

The shotgun falls to the ground and Amy grabs the shotgun and throws it away from the Russian’s reach — the shotgun hits the ground and goes off, spraying George with shot. George is blown off of his chair and falls to the floor unconscious, bleeding from a hole in his torso.

The scene grows chaotic as Rowdy is subdues the Russian and they drag him into a cold storage pantry and lock the door.

Scene 02 – Argyle goes through the Russian’s pockets and retrieves a note. It is a page from a cargo manifest written in Russian from a ship named Lysenko; Amy identifies the writing as the same that was on the crashed train tanker car with seeds spilling out of it onto the Dover countryside.

There is also a small log book in the Russian’s possession but the investigators have no way to read it.

SCENE 03 – Argyle goes to the lobby after the party hears the sound of sobbing and they recall the thump they heard before the Russian man entered the kitchen. There he sees a young woman wearing once-fine clothes, now torn up, her body bruised and her appearance dissheveled. The woman is in shock and screams when she sees Argyle. He assures her that he will not hurt her and is able to cut her bonds. He escorts the woman back to the kitchen.

Once the woman has a brandy in her hand, she explains that her name is Jessica Mardell, a rich socialite. She had attended a party last night and was out drinking until dawn. When she woke up today with a terrible hangover, she was surprised when none of her servants answered the bell.

Venturing out onto the street, Jessica saw the carnage that befell Dover. Wandering the streets, she came upon the drunk Russian, who was dressed like a scientist. After tying Jessica up, the man dragged her around Dover. He stopped to take the clothes off of a dead Russian sailor. Eventually, the smell of cooking food must have brought him to the Crown Hotel.

SCENE 04 – The party splits up and discovers a few more clues from the hospital and a radio enthusiast’s home — apparently, these strange plants have spread quickly not only throughout England, but Europe, and possibly as far as America within hours.

They learn that the plants are a new species based on Lamark, not Darwinian, evolution — adapting instantly to their new surroundings. Anyone who had ingested any water found themselves a living host for the new plants which grew rapidly inside people while they are still alive. First the victims experience debilitating stomach pains accompanied by a high fever and great thirst, followed by delusions, madness, and finally an excruciating death.

It appears many people chose to kill themselves rather than succumb to the strange white plants.

From what the investigators could understand, the plant was developed in Russia and the seeds brought to Dover via cargo ship.

Scene 05 – Returning to the Crown Hotel, the party realizes that they are likely the only people alive in England; certainly the only ones alive for many, many miles.

The team interrogates the Russian scientist as best as they can using a Russian to English dictionary. The scientist tells them about the plants, blames himself for the death of mankind, and tells the party to kill him.

Before anyone can decide what to do, Jessica shoots the scientist in the head.

SCENE 07 – Overcome with the crushing reality and hopelessness of their plight, Argyle tells the others that he’s going up to his room for a nap, where he drinks a glass of water and waits for the inevitable …

After a time, once George has been stabilized, Amy goes upstairs to ask Argyle if he is going to accompany them to the military base next to the port. She discovers Argyle dead, white foam coming out of his mouth, a glass held limply in his hand.

Amy’s mind utterly shatters at this and she slumps against the wall. The others find her huddled on the floor in the darkened room with the dead Argyle, arms wrapped around her knees, catatonic and unresponsive.

After some debate, they decide that they cannot treat Amy and cannot wait any longer as every hour brings them closer to dying themselves. They leave Amy in the Crown Hotel with her dead family rotting in the reception room below…

SCENE 07 – Rowdy and George walk to the military base overlooking the port of Dover, the earthquakes now getting worse and worse. Then, across the water, they see a massive, tentacled thing rise out of the water, standing 40 ft among the waves. The earth shakes terribly and the chalk cliffs of Dover begin to fall into the sea.

Rowdy and George run as fast as they can until they come across an abandoned mail truck blocking the road. They jump into the truck and head towards Kent, though the roads are full of the dead and there are no signs of life ahead …
