SCENE 01 – The Terrapin now sails past the northwestern horn of the Blackfields, and Rebek tells Jein on helm to be on the alert; there is a gap between the Wildsea and the start of the Mto Hatari; the tree-river which will take them to the interior of the Reach.

Rebek tells tells Jein that they will need maximum speed to clear the gap; if the Terrapin fails to make it across, it will fall through the chasm all the way to the bottom of the Wildsea and they will all likely perish in the crash.

Jein turns the Terrapin to the heading Rebek tells him and the ship starts gaining speed, the giant Leviathan heart pounding under the strain, every beat thrumming through the ship and felt through the crew’s feet on the main deck.

SCENE 02 – There!, Rebek shouts, pointing at an outcrop ahead. Jutting out from the sheer limestone cliff face are two towers carved from the very rock itself, slanting outwards to form a giant V above the cliff; whether the towers were built that way or some cataclysmic shift caused them to separate, they now stood before the crew, a warning carved from stone. Jein turns the Terrapin and aims for it as one would aim an arrow through a sight.

At that moment, however, two things happen: the quickly setting sun drops below the clouds and paints the entire cliff face a dull red. The reflective nacre within the limestone reflects and refracts the direct sunlight into a thousand blinding shards of red light making it virtually impossible to see the gap between the towers. Jein lays the flat of his hand against his forehead trying to line the ship up just so. Mr Navigator signals from his position of watch at the bow of the ship: Movement ahead!

Swinging from between the towers are about two dozen Tinker Monkeys, laying thick vines across the gap between the towers: a trap to catch the Terrapin so the Tinker Monkeys might steal as much as they can grab.

SCENE 03 – As the Terrrapin careens towards the towers and Tinker Monkey trap, the ship exits the Wildsea and is afloat for several seconds as it makes its way across the gap; below can be seen a crevasse of unknown depth, a zone of death between the cliff and the sea. Members of the crew hold on for their lives, some screaming, others praying.

With a thud, the Terrapin lands onto the tree-river; a major earthquake caused the Reach to split in two at this location and the sea quickly filled the void, now a narrow tract of treacherous growth that throws ships towards the interior of the reach like a bullet from a gun.

Jein wildly turns the helm to line the ship up with the river, but is too late, the Terrapin slams into one of the towers, ceramic tiles shattering under the impact. Ahead lies the vine-web, Tinker Monkeys eagerly waiting for the ship to slow down.

SCENE 04 – Jein pushes the Terrapin as hard as the Leviathan’s heart can stand, the prow saws cutting through the vines, spraying the deck with vine pulp and shredded vegetation. The Tinker Monkeys howl at their prey escaping and the ship forces its way downriver, towards the interior of the Reach …

Rebek tells them that the hardest section is yet to come: ahead, in the quickly darkening river, are trees of white leaves; rapids and falls of incredible intensity, with rocks jutting out where the earthquake had failed to claim the land.

The party quickly debates whether it would be safer to drop anchor and deal with the Tinker Monkeys, or venture through the rapids at night. Mr Navigator volunteers to helm the ship, and Jein is glad to relinquish that duty in favor of being on watch.

SCENE 05 – With roles reversed, Mr Navigator is able to successfully guide the ship through the treacherous rapids without so much as scratching the Terrapin. Rebek is rendered speechless by this display and wonders aloud why Mr Navigator wasn’t on helm the whole time.

Under the cloak of darkness, the Terrapin drops anchor at Huntsmoor Port. The air thick with the smell of the nearby tar pits, the crew is more than happy to leave the ship for a while and walk on firm ground.

SCENE 06 – The next day the crew separates. Mr Navigator visits Dr Myconus regarding his wounds; Jein meets with an Ektus named Pinford, passionate representative of the Pitch Shifters. Rokko goes to the hunter’s lodge and uncovers rumours regarding Acorn Manor, the next stop on their journey.

The crew learns that getting the Terrapin back out to sea will be even more difficult than getting it to Huntsmoor if they wish to exit the way they came. Further, there is no tree-river wide enough for the Terrapin; from here they must journey either on foot or use the outrigger on the narrow tree-streams.
