SCENE 01 – Leaving the Arkham Historical Society, Grekov and Larkin head to Mrs McDonald’s Boarding Home at 119 Jenkins St. After tossing some pebbles at a 2nd floor window, it opens to reveal Evangeline Thompson and her roommate, Susan Douglas. Grekov tells the girls that they are planning a mixer the following night at Fenner’s Roadhouse, but on this evening, they are going to Christchurch Cemetery to look for the ghost of Hesper Payne. Grekov shows them a bottle of booze he had brought along to sweeten the deal. The girls deliberate for a minute, then throw their shoes down to the boys and sneak down the fire escape.
SCENE 02 – Whitney and Parker head to Christchurch Cemetery directly and find it closed. Ringing the gate bell, they are met by the caretaker, Herman, who is surprised to see them again. Whitney explains that they are trying to track down the grave robbers and asks if they can stay in the cemetery overnight in case the thieves return to the scene of the crime. Proffering a bottle of fine brandy to Herman, the old caretaker agrees to let them stay and leads them to the grave site and leaves his lantern with them. Noticing that they have no light source with them, Herman leaves them with is lantern, as well as the key to let themselves out when they are finished.
SCENE 03 – William returns to Frank’s Service Station and explains the students’ plan for the evening, being totally oblivious to the horror expressed by Frank and his wife. The talk of witches, ghosts, grave robbers, and unscrupulous curio dealers from New York is too much for them. William pays Frank $2 for the loan of some equipment and after he leaves, they decide to not keep William on as a boarder once the month is over.
William then heads to Aunt Lucy’s Diner for sandwiches to bring to the cemetery.
SCENE 04 – The students position themselves against a nearby mausoleum not far from the desecrated graves and enjoy their nighttime picnic as the night wears on. The temperature starts to get colder and the girls busy themselves preparing for a paper due on the causes of the Civil War.
Suddenly, Whitney’s lantern goes out and will not relight. Parker, who is some distance away from the others having grown board of sitting around talking about schoolwork, notices a violet light coming from one of the graves.
SCENE 05 – The students approach the grave as a faint violet light emanates from holes in the dirt Parker piled up earlier that day along the grave wall.
After some debate, Parker jumps into the grave with the shovel William rented from Frank and clears away the cold soil. The violet light can clearly be seen filling the small, square tunnel as it leads forward. Evangeline thinks this is a trick to scare the girls but Grekov swears this is real. Parker crawls into the tunnel along with William and Evangeline.
After a few turns, the students realize that the tunnels are steadily sloping downward and the strange hoof prints are everywhere. Eventually the tight, cold, dark, space gets to Parker and says he has to back out. The students all back out towards the cemetery.
Evangeline and Susan are freaked out by this turn of events and though Evangeline says it must be a prank, she is clearly scared. Barney and Grekov take the girls home and Whitney offers his house for anyone who wants to spend the night — all of the friends take him up on the offer, not wanting to left alone.
