Dateline: Thursday, 26 April, 1900 – SCENE 01 – Whitney goes to St Mary’s Teaching Hospital and confirms that Grekov has been admitted; he spies a police officer stationed outside of Grekov’s room and returns to inform the others.
SCENE 02 – Grekov awakens and is greeted by his doctor, and an Arkham Police Department officer, Detective O’Reily. O’Reily questions Grekov, tells him not to leave town, and informs him that the crystal skull was stolen from Anna Mitchell-Hedges.
SCENE 03 – The friends meet Grekov at the hospital and catch one another up. Grekov releases himself from the hospital and all of his belongings, less the telegram, which is being held as evidence, are returned to him.
SCENE 04 – The friends go to the park at Independence Square to plan their next move. It seems that Jameson is several steps ahead of them and things look very bad for Grekov. Returning to his dorm house, Grekov speaks with his roommate, Ben Reid, who is concerned and upset. Reid tells Grekov that the police had been by with a search warrant and went through the house. Reid is worried that something terrible may happen at Walpurgisnaht.
SCENE 05 – Returning to the Orne Library, Grekov confirms that what Jameson told him before he attacked was true: the unmarked graves at Hangman Hill is not where Aylesbury Hill was located. What Grekov discovers is even worse: Arkham didn’t expand to the south, as Jameson had told him, but north — the old cemetery now lies beneath Jenkin St, the location of the McDonald’s boarding house, referred to as the ‘curse house’ by the Arkham Advertiser.
Larkin borrows Whitney’s motor to retrieve Evangeline as quick as possible so she can assist in the research.
SCENE 06 – The team splits up with Grekov and Parker going to the Arkham Police Department to warn O’Reily. Grekov convinces O’Reily to go to the boarding house and see if Susan Mason is there, as well as perhaps Jenkins. Grekov believes that the stolen skull is likely to be there as well. O’Reily agrees, but on the condition that Grekov and Parker stay at the police station.
SCENE 07 – Barney and Whitney arrive at McDonald’s boarding house, finding it dark and quiet. Whiney’s motor is in front. Trying the door, Whitney finds it unlocked. After retrieving his driving gloves, Whitney quietly opens the door and steps inside. It is very dark on the parlour floor of the house, and Barney knocks a vase off from a table just inside the doorway. This alerts a lightly-resting Mrs McDonald (who keeps an ear out for unauthorized male guests), who comes flying out of her room brandishing a cast iron skillet.
The pair are pushed outside by McDonald just as O’Reily arrives with two policemen. The boys are separated from McDonald and questioned. The boys are fined and left with a warning from the police. Not knowing where to go next, they return to Whitney’s house.
SCENE 08 – Later that evening, a very angry O’Reily returns to the police department and demands to know what kind of game Grekov is playing at. Grekov realizes that he has no choice but to tell O’Reily the complete truth, regardless of how insane it sounds.
At the end of the story, O’Reily believes that Grekov believes he is telling the truth but says, for his own safety, Grekov must stay in the station overnight. In the morning, he will send for an Alienist from the Asylum to interview Grekov. O’Reily assures Grekov that he is not under arrest — yet — and that his cooperation will go a long way to proving his innocence. Grekov agrees and Parker is sent home.
